Football has been trying to make this work for years and the rich clubs always find a way around it. Can't really see cycling being any different tbh, the money just moves somewhere else.
For every dollar above a set limit, a matching amount could go into a shared account allocated to developing teams/nations. Competition is good for the sport, funding cycling clubs is good for the sport.
Sounds good but how do you even enforce it across that many countries and sponsors? Feels like the kind of thing that's great on paper and a nightmare in practice.
The gap between the top two or three teams and everyone else is getting a bit silly. A cap wouldn't fix it overnight but at least the smaller teams could hang onto their best riders instead of losing them every winter.
Would just love to see more than one team actually able to race for GC. Right now you kind of know who's winning before the season even starts. Bring on the cap.
There should be a salary cap, but who’s going to want to accept a pay cut? Plus, there are so many fiscal loopholes, how can you legislate or monitor any payments?
It is a great way to even up the competition but won’t help with making the sport more sustainable.
